Government Response to the Wuhu Church Incident of 1891

Abstract

In the 17th year of the Guangxu reign (1891), an anti-foreign religious incident erupted in Wuhu, Anhui, where citizens burned down church properties and attacked the British consulate. This case marked the first incident of the “Yangtze River Missionary Incident.” Drawing upon multiple historical sources, this article examines the sequence of events, the extent of damage to foreign assets, the reactions and demands of Westerners, as well as the Qing government's response measures.
